Title: On Warmth
Author: wishiknewwho
Rating: G
Characters: Ten / Rose
Dislcaimer: I don't own Doctor Who and it's probably just as well that I don't because it'd be nothing but hugs and hair ruffling for the foreseeable future.
Spoilers: None whatsoever.
Summary: Rose gets cold. The Doctor warms her up. Not nearly as exciting as it sounds.
Beta: No one but my poor proofing skills on this one.
Author Notes: Dear
salimali, Ages ago, you asked me to write you a fic because you were cold. Fortunately, it is cold in the UK for a good portion of the year, so this fic is still warranted. I hope that you have an amazing week, because you totally deserve it. *hugs* xxx
Rose felt the icy wind deep in her bones as she trampled along behind the Doctor, struggling to put one foot in front of the other and stay upright in the snow that was threatening to swallow her deep yellow snow boats. She tucked her mittened hands in close to her body and forced herself to ignore the stinging in her cheeks and nose.
The Doctor marched along ahead of her, clad in his usual attire of coat, suit, and trainers, seemingly unaffected by the blistering wind or the piles of snow. Rose wondered if perhaps he had made some sort of modification to his trainers, giving them a snowshoe-like quality that kept him from sinking in the snow.
“All right, Rose?” he asked, glancing back at her.
“Yeah,” she gritted out, losing her footing on some slippery ice and barely catching herself before she fell. It was her own fault that she found herself in this situation. He’d warned her that it would be cold and had given her the option of staying behind while he ventured out to find the much-needed TARDIS part. But stubborn as usual, she had insisted on accompanying him.
Naturally, he’d miscalculated the landing and instead of trying again, he’d kept moving forward, promising her that the little village was “just a little bit further.” It had actually been close to three miles away, and now they were on their way back, the needed part safely in the Doctor’s pocket, about a half mile from the TARDIS.
She stumbled again, putting her hands out in front of her to stop her fall, grabbing the Doctor’s shoulders to steady herself. Her face bumped into his back and he felt so inexplicably, deliciously warm that she longed to press her cold cheeks and nose deeper into his coat.
“Rose,” he said again, his voice concerned as he spun around and grabbed her under her elbows. His eyes scanned over her face and hands and then came to rest on her eyes. “We need to get you back to the TARDIS.” He wrapped his arm around her waist and propelled her back towards the ship, not slowing down even when she protested.
They reached the ship in record time and the Doctor ushered her inside. He shrugged his coat off and shook the snow from it before dropping it on the console chair. Rose stood still, just basking in the comforting warmth of the ship.
“You’ve got to get out of those wet clothes,” he scolded gently, moving towards her and plucking her hat from her head and tugging her mittens off. “If we’re not careful, you’ll be ill.”
She nodded slowly and fiddled with her zipper. Pain seared through her fingers as they began to warm up and she grimaced in pain. “Can you help me?” she asked softly.
He hummed worriedly as he pulled the zipper down and pushed the coat from her shoulders. She shivered violently once she lost its warmth. “I’m sorry,” he murmured. “We’ll get you in some warm clothes in just a minute.” He helped her up on the console chair and knelt in front of her, struggling to get her boots off. He stood up again and ran his hands up and down her arms.
Rose carefully flexed her fingers, trying to ignore the ache that had settled in them and in her nose and cheeks. She’d certainly learned her lesson, and would no longer join him on his subzero adventures. “Thanks,” she said.
“No problem,” he said. “How about you go change into some warm clothes and get under your covers? I’ll bring you something hot to drink.”
His suggestion sounding nothing short of wonderful, and she nodded her assent, sliding down from the chair. “Tea?” she asked.
“Whatever you want,” he responded, smiling sweetly at her as she left the console room.
She found a pair of thick flannel pyjamas in her chest, and still shaking, quickly changed into them and hurried into her bed. She continued to shiver, her teeth chattering as she pulled her knees to her chest, trying to make herself as small as possible. She was just weighing the merits of leaving the warmth under her covers to find more clothes when her door opened to reveal the Doctor holding a tray with a couple of mugs and a plate stacked high with toast.
“I thought you might be hungry,” he said, sitting the tray on her bedside table.
“I can’t get warm,” she said through her chattering teeth.
He put his hand to her head, smoothing her hair back as he clucked sympathetically. “All right, budge up,” he said gently. She moved over, stretching her legs out to make room for him in her bed while he took off his jacket and trainers. He went to her closet and found another blanket.
“Won’t you be hot?” she asked as he draped it over her.
“Nah,” he said. “Not too sensitive to changes in temperature, in case you hadn’t noticed.”
“I noticed,” she said with a wry smile.
She had to hold back as sigh as he crawled under the covers with her, but she couldn’t stop herself from moving closer to him. She knew she must have been awfully cold for him to feel so warm. He slipped his arm around her, drawing her in to his relative warmth.
“Thank you,” she whispered, burying her face in his neck.
“Your nose is like a piece of ice,” he said, laughing and tucking her in closer to him.
“Sorry,” she mumbled.
His hand sought out hers, his warm fingers rubbing her frozen ones. “You should drink your tea soon,” he said.
“I know, but this is so cosy,” she sighed. She was beginning to feel drowsy now that her shivers were slowing down.
“Mmm,” he agreed, kissing her forehead and then her cheek.
In a bit, he’d get her up for tea and try to get her to eat some toast, and then they’d be off to the next adventure, but for just a few moments longer, she settled in and enjoyed her time with him.
