Title: (Over)Reacting
Author: wishiknewwho
Rating: G
Characters: Ten / Rose, OC
Dislcaimer: I don't own Doctor Who and it's probably just as well that I don't because it'd be nothing but hugs and hair ruffling for the foreseeable future.
Spoilers: None for DW; takes place in a world where Doomsday never happened. However, if you intend to read my fic Miles to Go and don't want it spoiled, you might want to wait on this one.
Summary: Kira has a cold, but the Doctor is certain it's something much worse.
Author Notes: This is one I've been wanting to write for ages. One could say I made the request of myself. ;) Sorry it's been so long since I posted. Work and I don't agree with each other. I'll try to be better.

Thanks as always to my lovely betas, [livejournal.com profile] salimali and [livejournal.com profile] electrictoes. They put up with a lot from me...more than you will ever know.

The Doctor jolted awake at the sound of a little cough. He looked over at Rose, who was fast asleep next to him. She was on her stomach, the pillow half over her head and she was breathing deeply. He smiled at her and moved the pillow, knowing she couldn’t be comfortable like that.

He heard another cough and then Kira’s voice calling out. “Mummy? Daddy?”

Rose stirred next to him, but he laid a hand on her back. “I’ve got it, love,” he said quietly, and she went back to sleep.

He got up and made his way to Kira’s room, wondering if she’d had one of the nightmares Rose had told him about. He turned on the hallway light and made his way over to her bed.

“Kira?” he asked. “Are you all right, sweetheart?”

“Daddy?” Her voice was hoarse and she looked up at him with dark, wide eyes. Something wasn’t right, and he felt his hearts speed up as panic began to set in.

He knelt by her side and picked up her hand, noticing that her skin felt clammy and much warmer than usual. “Kira, love, what’s the matter?” he asked urgently. He cupped her face in his palm; she was burning up.

“I’m feeling ill,” she said.

He clicked on the bedside lamp and they both blinked in the light. Her skin was certainly paler than usual. He pressed the flat of his hand to her forehead like he’d seen Rose do, noting that she seemed to be a few degrees warmer than normal. “What’s wrong?” he asked. “What feels bad?”

“My throat,” she said, her eyes filling up with tears. “It hurts, Daddy.”

That was the final straw. He was taking her to the TARDIS to run some tests. His daughter should not be in pain like that; something was seriously wrong. He wondered if she’d caught something on that last planet they’d visited. There was something not quite right about the air there. Maybe she was having some sort of allergic reaction. He searched around her room until he found her coat and hat, then helped her sit up in the bed while he got her bundled up.

“Where are we going?” Kira asked.

“We’re going to the TARDIS,” he answered, lifting her up into his arms. “She will make you feel better.”

Kira nodded and rested her head wearily on his shoulder. He swiftly carried her across the hallway to Rose’s room. He didn’t really feel he had time to stop, but she deserved to know their daughter was ill and he didn’t want her to wake up and find them gone.

“Rose?” he said, loud enough to wake her but not startle her. He moved to stand next to the bed, Kira still held protectively against him.

“Hmm?” she said, turning over. She opened her eyes slowly, and once she saw him and Kira, she sat up. “What’s wrong?”

He hesitated. He didn’t want to make it sound as serious as it was in front of Kira; she didn’t need to be upset any further. But Rose needed to know the situation. “Kira’s ill,” he said. “I think she may have picked something up on Seflian Bru. I’m going to take her to the TARDIS and run some tests.”

“Tests?” Kira asked, her voice alarmed.

Rose frowned and stood up, coming over to stand by them. He couldn’t figure out why she wasn’t more distressed. Didn’t she realise that this was urgent?

“We need to hurry, Rose,” he said, trying to take her hand in his and pull her towards the door.

“One second,” Rose said, pulling her hand away and pressing it to Kira’s forehead. She nodded thoughtfully, then moved closer to press her cheek to Kira’s. “Where does it hurt, love?”

“My throat,” Kira whimpered, turning in his arms and holding her hands out to Rose.

Rose gently took her and settled down with her on the bed. “And your nose? Does it feel all stuffy?”

Kira nodded and laid her head on Rose’s chest. Rose rubbed Kira’s back.

The Doctor stood there for a moment, feeling rather helpless. He couldn’t figure out what was going on, but he needed to convince Rose that they had to get Kira to the TARDIS as soon as possible. “What are you doing?” he asked her.

Rose held out her hand to him and he moved closer to her and let her pull him down with them on the bed. “She’s got a cold,” Rose said.

He put his hand over Rose’s on Kira’s back. “How can you be sure?” he asked.

Rose gave him a small, comforting smile. “She gets one every year around this time. It spreads around the school. She’ll be under the weather for a couple of days, but I promise, she’ll be all right.”

He still didn’t like the idea of her being ill. “You know, a few centuries from now, they find a cure for the common cold. I could just pop ahead—“

Rose cut him off. “Yeah, but immune systems might be different then as well. I’d rather do what we usually do and let her recover like normal.”

He frowned. “I probably have something in the TARDIS that could help her.”

Rose pressed her hand to his cheek. “She’s fine, darling. A little medicine and some rest and she’ll be good as new.” Rose threaded her fingers through Kira’s hair.

“Still, I want to do something to help,” the Doctor said. He rubbed his hand over Kira’s back, noting that she seemed to be getting warmer with fever.

“Can you get me the thermometer?” Rose asked.

He’d hoped he could do something slightly more important, but did as she asked, finding it in the medicine cabinet and bringing it back to her quickly. She slipped it under Kira’s tongue and they waited silently for it to beep. When it did, Rose took it from Kira’s mouth and switched on the lamp so she could read it.

“Thirty-eight degrees,” she announced. “She needs some Calpol and I’m out. Do you think you could get her some?”

He nodded. He pressed a kiss to Kira’s forehead. “I’ll be back soon, sweetheart,” he said.

“Okay, Daddy,” she said, giving him a weak little smile.

He hurried from the flat, not bothering to put on his coat. It was cold outside, but he barely noticed it as he made his way to the nearest Tesco. He went inside, blinking in the harsh lights of the shop. He found the children’s cold medicines, and was daunted by what he found. Rose had said Calpol, but there were so many different kinds. Unsure of what to get, and what symptoms Kira might develop over the next few hours, he picked up several and hoped that at least one would work.

He carried the bag back to the flat and raced up the stairs, too impatient and wound up to wait for the lift. He found Rose and Kira where he’d left them on the bed. They were lying down, Kira fast asleep in Rose’s arms. Rose was pressing a cold compress to Kira’s head.

“Hey,” he whispered. “I’ve got the medicine.”

Rose nodded and eased out from under Kira, settling her back down on the bed. “She just fell asleep. I hate to wake her, but we need to get her fever down.” She took the bag from him. “Did you buy every cold medicine they had?”

“Maybe,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck. “I wasn’t sure which to get.”
Rose looked up at him, her eyes warm. “I love you,” she said, before looking back down. She
rummaged around in the bag until she found the one she needed.

He didn’t know where that had come from, but he was too concerned about Kira to question her right then. “Will that one work?” he asked, pointing to the bottle she’d selected.

“Yeah,” she answered, reading over the dosage instructions and pouring a small amount of the red liquid into the little cap. “Hold this.” She put the cap in his hand.

He curiously sniffed at the liquid, frowning at the artificial strawberry smell and wondering at how this little bit of medicine could be effective in fighting the raging battle that was going on inside his daughter’s body.

Rose lifted Kira to a sitting position. “Come on, love. You’ve got to wake up and take your medicine.”

Kira’s eyes opened slowly. “Mummy?” she asked.

“Shh,” Rose soothed. “I’m here. Daddy’s got some medicine for you. The strawberry one that you like.”

“Okay,” Kira said, still sounding half-asleep.

Rose motioned at him, and he put the little cap to Kira’s mouth, tilting it so she could drink. Once she drank it down, she sneezed, once, and then twice. He looked at Rose in fear.

“It’s fine,” Rose said, looking like she was holding back a smile. “She always sneezes when she takes medicine.”

“Are you sure?” he asked anxiously. He was new to all of this, Kira being ill and looking so small in Rose’s arms, even smaller than she usually did. Yet Rose was so calm, going through the motions like it was something she’d done many times before. He wondered how many nights she’d sat up with Kira, nursing her back to health.

Rose cupped his cheek in her hand, and he leaned in to her comforting warmth. “She’s going to be fine, Doctor. You have to trust me.”

Those were the magic words. He trusted her with everything, including their daughter’s life. If Rose promised that Kira would be fine, then Kira would be fine. “Okay,” he said. “I love you too, you know.”

Rose smiled. “I know.” She carefully laid Kira back down on the bed, running her fingers through her hair as she fell back asleep. “We’ll keep her in here tonight, yeah?”

He nodded gratefully, relieved that he could watch over Kira, just to make sure that it really was only a cold. He laid down on one side of her and Rose laid on the other. Rose pulled the covers up around the three of them, tucking them in safely.

He and Rose whispered to each other for a while, Rose telling him of other times Kira had been ill, including a horrifying time when she’d run a high fever and Rose had to take her to casualty in the middle of the night.

Eventually Rose drifted off to sleep, but he stayed awake, keeping watch over his little girl, cataloguing every sniffle, every cough, smoothing her hair back from her face and adjusting her blankets to make sure she was comfortable. He occasionally put his hand to her forehead, noting that her fever was receding.

When Kira awoke in the morning, she was still ill, and the Doctor stayed at home with her, treating her with juice and soup and cartoon films, all things that Rose promised would go a long way in making her feel better. He followed Rose’s instructions for giving her medicine to the letter, and waited impatiently as her symptoms improved.

All the same, he didn’t let go of his anxiety until the next morning, when she awoke bright eyed and bouncing off the walls, complaining that he wouldn’t let her do anything fun.

Oh, this is a sweet chapter. It's so hard when a child is ill; you feel so helpless! Luckily, Rose had been through it before, and knew just what to do. At least the Doctor listened to her!

*Hugs*

Yep, I just imagined him freaking out. Part of it was because he hasn't experienced it and part just because he's a dad and that's what they tend to do. Thanks! *hugs*

Mother knows best. :D Oh, Doctor. This was really really adorable. I love the idea of the Doctor being so nervous about what was happening to Kira. Very sweet.

I remember how scared I was over every little cough and sneeze my daughter had and how by the time my son came along it didn't phase me at all anymore. Poor Doctor, he just hasn't had the benefit of sitting up all night with a sick one. It's the only way to learn that it's ok to let them sleep and just as ok to let you sleep.

He'll figure it out, because Rose is a good teacher.

Yay for another surprise Miles fic! *bounces happily*

This was a sweet one too - I can just picture the Doctor buying all the kids cold medicines, just like every other man I know would have done. I love Rose's reaction to his purchases too. =) Poor Kira. Is there anything more pitiful that a child waking you up at night because they don't feel good? Aww. I'm glad this little one had the Doctor to look after her, even if all he could do for her was heat soup and put on cartoons. Usually, that's enough.

I think he learned a lot about being a dad from this one. I think he's beginning to realize it's less about grand gestures and more about the little things. Thanks for responding!! :D

Awww, how sweet. It's touching how he trusts Rose, despite his fears, which seem particularly strong. Oh, and next time I'm coming down with something, can I have the Doctor over with soup and juice and DVDs? (Blackpool does the job nicely, but you know...)

Yeah, I just imagined him freaking out over Kira being ill because he'd never experienced it before, and an ill child can be terrifying if you don't know what's going on.

And let me know the next time you're ill...I see what I can do about getting the Doctor to you. ;)

Heh, this kind of reminds me of how I acted when my baby sister got sick the first time. I was nine, and I think I drove my mom insane trying to help.
