Title: My Love, On Christmas Day
Author: wishiknewwho
Rating: G
Characters: Ten / Rose, OC (Kira)
Dislcaimer: I don't own Doctor Who and it's probably just as well that I don't because it'd be nothing but hugs and hair ruffling for the foreseeable future. Title taken from the song "Christmas Day" by Dido.
Spoilers: None for DW; takes place in a world where Doomsday never happened. However, if you intend to read my fic Miles to Go and don't want it spoiled, you might want to wait on this one.
Summary: It's the last day of school before the Christmas holidays.
Author Notes: This will be the last Kira-heavy one for a while, I promise.

Huge thanks to those lovely girls, [livejournal.com profile] nipplemuggins  and [livejournal.com profile] salimali  for the beta.

Kira Tyler bounced impatiently from one foot to the other. Miss Wilder would not stop talking. She was going on and on about the lessons they would be starting after the Christmas holidays and how they should take their reading books home and read a story nightly. Kira shook her head. She’d finished the book almost ten minutes after she’d got it. She hated the book and it’s babyish, simple stories. She wished Miss Wilder would finish talking and let them go home.

“Have a seat, Miss Tyler,” Miss Wilder said in a stern tone.

Kira blushed when she realised that the teacher was talking to her. Right, she’d known she was doing something she wasn’t supposed to do. It always felt like that with Miss Wilder. She wasn’t talking enough or sitting still or playing with the other kids. She just wasn’t always sure what she was doing wrong at the moment she was doing it; it only became clear to her after Miss Wilder told her off.

She sank down into her chair. Really, it wasn’t her fault that she’d had so much sugar at the class Christmas party. She felt like her energy was going to run away with her, and she might go mad if she didn’t get to move soon. She glanced to her left to see Ben grinning at her. He cocked an eyebrow at her, the gesture he always used when she got in trouble. Kira decided then and there that she needed her own expression for the times when he got into trouble, which was certainly more frequently than she did.

For now, she just gave him a little frown, then stared at the table, refusing to look at him even though she could feel him trying to get her attention. He’d only get them into trouble, and Kira was pretty sure she’d had enough of it for one day.

It had started that morning. Daddy woke her up as usual, they had their Coco Pops, and then they played tag around the flat until Mum said it was time to go to school. Kira had pulled her best pout, but Mum had just kissed both her cheeks, reminded her that today was the class Christmas party, and promised that she wouldn’t have to go to school for two whole weeks once the day was over. As always, Kira had let her Mum have her way. Mum always said that Kira could be a right terror when she didn’t get what she wanted, but from the way Kira saw it, her mum could pout with the best of them.

But anyway, the day had started off normal, if a little more fun than usual. She was giggly when they left the flat, and got even gigglier as Mum and Daddy walked her to school. They were being so silly, tickling each other and pretending to fight. Once Daddy had almost tripped and she and her mum both got the hiccups they laughed so hard.

So it wasn’t her fault that she went into class giggly. Or that Miss Wilder had decorated the room the evening before. Kira wasn’t always that fond of Miss Wilder, but the lady certainly knew how to turn a boring old classroom into something resembling a winter wonderland. The party wasn’t until the afternoon, but Kira spent the entire morning staring at the snowflakes, wreaths, and fairy lights that adorned their room.

Miss Wilder had scolded her all morning. But really, the teacher had no one to blame but herself. She was the one who’d put up the decorations. If she didn’t want them to be looked at, to be admired, she shouldn’t have put them there.

And it certainly wasn’t her fault that Ben kept making funny faces at her all during the lesson. Every time she looked at him he was sticking out his tongue or making his nose do this flaring thing that was just hilarious. Kira could barely contain herself.

Add the sugar and excitement of the Christmas party to the mix and she was practically bouncing off the walls. She and Ben had each grabbed a handful of sweets and hid under Miss Wilder’s desk. She’d called them for a good ten minutes before she found them. Looking worried and angry, she’d sent them both to time out and promised that notes would be going home.

That had left Kira in a foul mood. Mum would be angry with her for misbehaving. And Daddy, well she had thought for a while that Daddy would be on her side of things, when it came to getting in trouble, but it looked like Mum had won him over. So he would be angry too. She just hoped her sonic didn’t get taken away like last time.

Kira put her head down on the table, ignoring Ben and everyone else, until it was time to go home. Thankfully, Miss Wilder left her alone. She pressed her forehead to the cool wood and closed her eyes.

The past few weeks had been brilliant. Well, parts of them had been brilliant. Daddy coming back into their lives, Mum finally admitting that she did love him, and Daddy moving in with them, those things had been brilliant, even if there were some bits in between that weren’t so brilliant.

Things had changed a lot, now that Daddy lived with them. For one, their flat wasn’t nearly as quiet. Daddy talked loud and he talked frequently. He babbled on about anything. Kira remembered one time when talked for ten minutes straight about toothbrushes. Mum would always roll her eyes when he rambled like that, but Kira knew that she secretly loved it. Kira loved it too. Daddy was silly, but he always kept things interesting.

Mum was happier now, too. Kira had always known that her mum was sad, but she’d never known why. But now that Daddy was there, Mum smiled so much more and Kira never heard her cry. She didn’t stare off into the distance like she used to, looking a million miles away when Kira caught her off guard.

Kira loved it when the three of them were together. Mum and Daddy were so silly. They made her laugh and always knew just when she needed a hug. She was so excited about the Christmas holiday. Mum had promised to get some extra time off work and Daddy had said they could go a couple of places, although he and Mum had both agreed that a longer TARDIS trip would have to wait until the next time Kira was off from school.

Miss Wilder finally dismissed the class and Kira leaped from her seat, swinging her rucksack over her shoulders as she fled the room, ignoring the teacher’s warning to slow down. With any luck, Miss Wilder would have a nice busy Christmas and forget everything by the time school started back.

Kira rushed down the corridor, Ben close at her heels. She had this urge to take his hand in hers, the way Mum and Daddy often did, but she pushed it away. She and Ben had never held hands before, and if she did it, he might think that she wanted to be his girlfriend. Which she didn’t. Definitely not.

They burst out of school, and even though it was freezing cold, she felt instantly better. She could see Mum and Daddy waiting for her. Daddy had his long coat on, and her mum was tucked inside it, his arm wrapped around her. The moment they saw her, they both flashed big grins.

Kira turned to Ben. His mum was waiting for him, and Kira remembered that Ben would be gone for almost three weeks. His family was going on holiday to America, and she wouldn’t see him for a very long time.

Ben ran his hands through his curly hair, making it stand on end. He always did that when he was nervous or uncomfortable. “Maybe my Mum will let me use her mobile. So I can call you.”

Kira gave a little nod. She hadn’t really thought about missing Ben until just this moment. But they spent every day at school together and many afternoons she would go to his flat or he would come to hers. It would be weird not to see him.

“Okay then,” Ben said, looking towards his mum and bouncing on his toes. “I’ll see you after the holiday.”

“Bye,” Kira mumbled as he walked away. He took several steps and was almost out of earshot before she was calling out to him. “Ben!” He turned and looked at her, his eyebrows raised. Kira wasn’t sure what to say, now that she had his attention. She just knew she had to say something.

“Merry Christmas!” she finally said, offering him a grin.

He smiled back, his eyes lighting up. “Merry Christmas,” he echoed, then turned and ran towards his mother.

Kira felt a warm little glow in her heart and she smiled to herself as she made her way to her mum and daddy. It was only then that she realised that she’d be seeing Ben that night, at the Nativity. She felt quite silly for a moment, for acting like she had, but then remembered that he’d forgotten as well. At least she wasn’t the only silly one.

Once she reached her parents, Daddy swept her up into his arms, crushing her to his chest, and Mum leaned over to give her a kiss.

“Hello, love,” she said. “Are you ready for your time off?”

Kira nodded.

“Good,” Daddy said. “I’ve got lots of things planned for us. We have to get a tree, and shop for presents, ooh, and bake biscuits.”

Kira laughed. It sounded like it was going to be a fun Christmas.

“What was that with you and Ben back there?” Mum asked.

“What?” Kira asked. Daddy started walking, shifting her to one side so that he could hold Mum’s hand.

“You know,” Mum said, and Kira could practically hear the smile in voice. “You said something to him and both of you started grinning like mad.”

“Oh,” Kira said. “I just told him merry Christmas.”

“Oh, is that all,” Mum said, and it wasn’t a question. She tweaked Kira’s nose and gave her a puzzling smile that Kira couldn’t figure out.

Kira swatted her hand away. She wasn’t sure what her Mum was going on about, but she didn’t like it. She turned to her daddy. “Are we getting our tree today?” she asked.

Daddy beamed. “Tomorrow morning,” he said. “Your mum said it would get dark too early this evening. I told her we still had an hour left of sunlight, but she wouldn’t agree.”

Kira smirked. “Mum takes ages to find a tree,” she said, giving her Mum a teasing grin.

“I do not,” her mum retorted. “I just like to find the most perfect one they have. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

Daddy bounced Kira on his hip. “Don’t worry, I’ll bring us lunch and some games to play. That way we won’t be bored.”

Kira laughed as Mum slapped Daddy on the arm. It was going to be a brilliant Christmas.

Aww, another great story. With finals staring me in the face, you are my only source of holiday cheer. I will be mainlining each Miles Christmas fic as soon as it's up.

As always, Kira had let her Mum have her way.
How magnanimous of her. =) I think she's probably right about Rose's pout though...

Ugh, I know that end of the year stress all to well. I just finished, though, so I should be posting a little more often. I wish you the best of luck on your finals.

I'm so glad you liked that line. I love writing from Kira's POV, and I have this idea of her imagining that she knows more than her Mum and Dad.

Just wanted to let you know, as you're the only one who's read so far, that I just went back and made a couple of changes. Nothing major. This was originally going to go after the one that comes next, but then I shifted everything. I just had to change a couple of lines to make things work. Sorry about that.

Thanks for the heads up, and the excuse to reread so soon. It was like those picture puzzles in Highlights Magazine. You know, what's different between the image on the left and the one on the right? I totally spotted the change, and I'm excited for the bonus Ben it implies.

Oh my gosh! I loved those things! And the ones where you have to find the hidden pictures. I've been doing those with my students all week.

And yes, there is a tiny bit more Ben in the next one. I love writing him, but for some reason, I've been neglecting him. I may have to do something about that one day.

Where there's like a hammer or a banana or something in the tree trunk? Oh, man, those were made of so much win!!

I love writing him, but for some reason, I've been neglecting him.
I love him too, and I love how you've been slowly exploring Kira's feelings (and her feelings about those feelings) for Ben.

Love your new icon, btw. The shadowing is great. Hamlet?

Yes! They drive me crazy until I can find all the pics. And I have a ton of 7-year olds surrounding me, trying to point them out.

I'm so glad you like what I'm doing with Kira. I was worried that people would be like "What? Why?" And even though he's not going to be in Christmas fics or the sequel (well probably not) I'm either going to do something with him in the sequel sequel or maybe something else.

Thanks. I have no idea where I got it; it was ages ago. It looks like Hamlet, though.

Oh she has her daddy's traits alright doesn't she. The whole story is gorgeous. Bet Rose was thinking Kira has a little boyfriend. Very cute thanks, just right for getting into the Christmassy feel.

Alas, I am unable to make it Christmas now. I wish that I could. But yay for 5 days off work!

Also, you might not want to read the Nativity story. Or have you already?? ;)
