Miles to Go: My Love, On Christmas Day - Seventeen
Author: wishiknewwho

Characters: Ten / Rose, OC (Kira)
Dislcaimer: I don't own Doctor Who and it's probably just as well that I don't because it'd be nothing but hugs and hair ruffling for the foreseeable future. Title taken from the song "Christmas Day" by Dido.
Spoilers: None for DW; takes place in a world where Doomsday never happened. However, if you intend to read my fic Miles to Go and don't want it spoiled, you might want to wait on this one.
Summary: Christmas Eve part three.
Author Notes: Here's the last of the Christmas Eve. Tomorrow will be Christmas, and then that's all.

Kira flopped down on her bed, exhausted but happy. It had been a long night, delivering all of those presents, but it was the first time they’d actually let her help. It felt good to do something to help others. She understood now why her mum and daddy loved it so much.
She closed her eyes and tried to sleep, but despite how tired she was, sleep wouldn’t come. She was just too wound up. Sighing, she threw off her blanket and padded into the living room, noting as she passed that her parents’ door was closed, signalling that they were in bed.
Mum and Daddy hadn’t let her help with her own presents, saying she might ruin the surprise, and they’d barely let her look in the living room when they’d ushered her off to bed a few minutes ago, but she wanted to see the tree, just for a few minutes. She knelt down next to it, ignoring the brightly wrapped presents piled underneath, and plugged in the fairy lights. Mum always turned them off before they went to bed, saying that she didn’t want to accidentally burn down the building.
The tree cast a soft glow over the little living room, and Kira stepped away from it, sitting cross legged a few feet away. She looked at the little Father Christmas ornament that they’d used every year for as long as she could remember, only now it meant so much more.
“I believe in you,” she whispered. And she really did. She wasn’t sure why she’d doubted him. She’d asked him to bring her mum and daddy back together and he’d done exactly as she wanted. She promised herself and the little figurine that she would never doubt him again.
“Kira?”
Kira’s heart leapt into her throat at the sound of her mum saying her name, and she turned around guiltily, prepared to be put back to bed. She opened her mouth to apologise, but then noticed that Mum was smiling softly at her.
“Hi, Mum,” she said finally, a little sheepishly.
“Hi, love,” Mum said, coming into the living room and sitting next to her.
Kira climbed in her lap, breathing in as her mum wrapped her arms tightly around her.
“What are you thinking about?” Mum asked, brushing Kira’s hair back in that comforting way that she always did.
“Just how Father Christmas gave me what I wanted for Christmas,” Kira said softly, leaning back against her mum and looking up at the glittering tree.
Her mum tilted her a little, until she was looking in her eyes. “How do you know that? Have you been peeking at your presents?”
“No.” Kira shook her head. “I’ve already got what I asked for.”
“What did you ask for, love?” Mum asked.
Kira’s lips curved up into a little smile. “I asked for you and Daddy to love each other so we could be a family.”
“Oh Kira.” Mum sounded like she was on the verge of tears and she held Kira tightly to her.
Kira wasn’t sure why she was so upset. “But everything worked out, Mum. Don’t you think?”
Mum pulled back until her warm brown eyes were focused on Kira. Kira could see the unshed tears there, but her mum didn’t seem bothered by them. “Yes, Kira, everything worked out perfectly,” she said, pressing a kiss to Kira’s forehead.
Kira gave a satisfied little nod as settled back against her mum and together they watched the flickering lights of the Christmas tree as they had done every year since Kira was born.

And that's so cool that you have real candles. I always wondered if anyone still did that.
And thanks for the heads up, I'll add that pronoun asap.
